Why Greif, Inc. Is (and Isn’t) the Right Packaging Partner for Your Business
Greif is a solid choice for predictable, large-volume container needs—but it’s not the cheapest, and it’s not for everyone.
I’ve spent the last 5 years managing packaging purchases for a mid-size chemical manufacturer—roughly $240K annually across 6 vendors. When we consolidated suppliers in 2024, Greif was a top contender. Here’s what I found, and where I’d draw the line.
The core reason we went with Greif (and still use them)
Consistency. Their steel drums, fiber drums, and IBCs arrive within 2–3 days of the promised date almost every time. For a plant running just-in-time, that reliability alone is worth the premium—or rather, the slightly higher unit cost compared to spot-market vendors. Actually, let me rephrase: the premium isn’t for the drum itself; it’s for the assurance that the drum will be there when your line is waiting.
People think expensive vendors deliver better quality. The assumption is that the price buys you a better physical product. The reality is that the price buys you a better process—order accuracy, on-time delivery, consistent spec. Greif’s global network means if a regional plant has a hiccup, they can reroute production from another facility. That’s hard to replicate with a smaller supplier.
Where Greif falls short (and what I’d recommend instead)
Look, I’m not saying Greif is perfect. Here’s the thing: their minimum order quantities can be a pain if your needs are sporadic. For a one-off emergency order of 50 steel drums, you’re better off with a local distributor. Greif’s internal processes are built for scale—talk to their sales rep, and they’ll steer you toward a quarterly blanket order. That works for us because we burn through 4,000+ drums a quarter. If you’re ordering 200 a year, the attention you’ll get is… limited. Worse than expected, actually.
Another limitation: custom printing. Greif offers standard labeling and a few color options, but if you need intricate branding on your fiber drums (like a fluffy Marc Jacobs tote bag aesthetic—hey, marketing asked once), you’ll want a specialist. Greif’s core is function, not fashion. That’s not a flaw; it’s a focus.
The hidden cost most buyers miss
Total cost with Greif isn’t just the drum price. It’s the minimum order, the freight terms (FOB their plant, typically), and the fact that rush orders—the ones you call in on a Tuesday afternoon for Friday delivery—carry a 20% surcharge. In our 2024 vendor audit, we found that rush fees from Greif averaged 15–18% vs. 10–12% at regional suppliers. Not deal-breaking, but worth budgeting for.
I’m not a logistics expert, so I can’t speak to ocean freight optimization. What I can tell you from a procurement perspective is: verify your incoterms before signing. Greif’s standard quote assumes collect freight; if you want delivered pricing, it’s a separate conversation.
How to know if Greif is right for you
People ask me: “Is Greif the best?” No. There’s no universal best. Greif is the best for companies that value supply certainty over absolute lowest price. If your operation can tolerate a 2–3 day delivery window and you have the storage space for a full truckload, Greif will save you headaches. If you need same-day, small-lot, or highly custom containers, look elsewhere.
—though I should note, even for small lots, their IBC exchange program is surprisingly flexible. We’ve used it for trial quantities of 10 units.
One more thing: the analyst sentiment
Greif, Inc. has attracted both bullish and bearish analyst opinions in recent quarters—mostly around its exposure to the industrial cycle. That volatility affects pricing negotiations. When we renegotiated our latest contract, we used the fact that containerboard demand was soft (Q3 2024) to lock in a small discount. If you’re evaluating Greif as a partner, pay attention to their quarterly earnings calls (available on their investor relations page). Their packaging jobs growth—greif packaging jobs, specifically—has been stable, which tells me they’re investing in capacity.
And for what it’s worth: if you ever find yourself reading a DSC alarm panel manual trying to understand shipping compliance, just call Greif’s regulatory help desk. Their team actually picks up.
